Pilates Reformer Buying Guide

Reformer Pilates is a dynamic form of Pilates that uses a specialised machine called a Reformer. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century, Joseph Pilates developed his method using a variety of equipment. The method of Reformer Pilates uses resistance and assistance of springs, pulleys, and a gliding platform. Reformer Pilates enhances strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination through controlled, precise movements. It targets core muscles while also engaging the entire body, making it effective for improving posture, muscle tone, and overall fitness. Suitable for all fitness levels, Reformer Pilates can be customised to individual needs, from rehabilitation to advanced athletic conditioning.

A Pilates Reformer, also known as a Pilates Machine, is a versatile exercise machine designed to enhance Pilates workouts. Designed by Joseph Pilates, the Reformer was designed to support his exercise method and consists of a flat, cushioned platform (the carriage) that moves along runners guided by springs, ropes, and pulleys. Users can perform a wide range of exercises by adjusting the resistance and positioning. The Pilates Reformer allows for both full-body workouts and targeted muscle training, offering support and resistance to help improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Suitable for all fitness levels, the Pilates Reformer is used in studios, gyms, and home settings to provide a comprehensive Pilates experience.

Reformer Pilates offers numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. It strengthens and tones muscles, particularly the core, improves overall body alignment and posture, and burns calories — contributing to weight loss. The resistance provided by the Reformer enhances flexibility, balance, and coordination. Regular practice can lead to increased muscular endurance and improved joint stability. Reformer Pilates is also low-impact, making it ideal for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Additionally, the focused, controlled movements promote mindfulness and stress reduction, contributing to better mental well-being. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, it can be customised to meet individual needs and goals.

Choosing the best Pilates Reformer depends on your specific needs, budget, aesthetic preferences and available space. For home use, consider whether you are likely to leave your Reformer out, or if you would benefit from a Pilates Reformer that can stand vertically or fold. Bear in mind that we recommend 60cm space either side of a Reformer (so 120cm between two Reformers) and 45cm space at the standing platform end for general exercise repertoire.

Commercial-grade Reformers are more durable and suitable for studios or frequent use, plus our Commercial Pilates Reformers feature warranties to safeguard your equipment from damage. It is also important to consider your or your clients’ height, as a larger Pilates Reformer might be more suitable for taller or broader people or those with a larger range of motion.

All Align-Pilates Reformers are subject to rigorous testing and quality control, but beyond this the cost of Pilates Reformers is mainly dependent on materials, adjustability, and features. Our most cost-effective Reformers, such as the R8-Pro, utilise stainless steel runners, whereas our high-end Pilates Reformers use aluminium or, in the case of the M8-Pro, Maple Wood. More expensive Pilates Reformers typically have greater adjustability of parts such as Rope Risers, Foot bars, Ropes, and the RC Spring Bar. For a detailed comparison of these features, see our Reformer Comparison Tool.

Deciding between a home or commercial Pilates Reformer depends on your intended use and budget. Home Pilates Reformers are generally more affordable, compact, or in the case of our F3 Folding Pilates Reformer, foldable for easy storage, making them ideal for personal use. They suit individuals looking to practice Pilates regularly without needing advanced features. Commercial Pilates Reformers, on the other hand, are built for durability and frequent use, with advanced features and materials, higher weight capacities, and a commercial warranty, making them suitable for Pilates studios or gyms. If you plan to offer professional training, a Reformer with suitable commercial warranty is essential.

Our Pilates Reformers range from 242cm to 263cm in length and 66cm to 76cm in width. In addition to this, we recommend 60cm space either side of the reformer, and 45cm clearance at the standing platform end, meaning a space measuring 383cm x 121cm is suitable for using any single Align-Pilates Reformer. This space doesn’t have to be permanently occupied however — folding, stacking, or standing Reformers can be ideal for multifunctional spaces. Joseph Pilates is often quoted as saying “In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will see the difference, and in 30 sessions, you will have a whole new body”. Using a Pilates reformer 2 to 3 times per week is ideal for most individuals to see noticeable improvements in strength, flexibility, and overall fitness. Beginners may start with fewer sessions to build familiarity and gradually increase frequency as they become more comfortable with the exercises. Regular practice helps to maintain progress and can prevent injury. Advanced practitioners or those aiming for specific fitness goals might use the reformer more frequently. Always listen to your body and allow adequate rest and recovery between sessions to avoid overtraining and ensure sustainable progress. It is also always advisable to contact your doctor before undertaking any new fitness regime.

Maintaining your Pilates reformer involves regular cleaning and periodic checks to ensure its longevity and safe operation. We recommend regular cleaning of the Reformer, particularly the upholstery and runners, in order to keep your equipment hygienic and prevent dirt and debris from impacting the smooth running of the carriage. It is also important to inspect the equipment for wear and tear, especially to ensure the springs and ropes are free from damage. Maintenance also includes ensuring bolts and other components are securely attached and tightened. For a detailed breakdown, we provide a detailed maintenance regime for your Pilates Reformer.
